Interest Groups (Chavurot)

Chavurot are groups of people who share common interests and meet on a regular basis to help create bonds of friendship within the Temple Adas Israel community.

Book Group

Do you love to read and discuss your reading? If so, the Temple Adas Israel Book Group is for you.

The Book Group meets during the summer to discuss literature with themes of importance to the group. Sessions are interactive and are led by Ruth Joseph, a temple congregant and avid reader.

Recent Book Group themes have included “The Present Past: Writers and Memory” (2019); “The Russians Are Coming” (2018) and “The Best Place on Earth” (2017).

This summer’s theme will be “Aging in Place: First Draft.” We will be reading and discussing works by Nicole Krauss, Howard Jacobson, Barbara Kingsolver, William Butler Yeats and others.

Dates for Summer 2020 are: May 24, June 14, July 12, and August 16.

Readings are available in the temple office two weeks prior to meetings. A donation of $5.00 is requested for each session. A continental breakfast will await you on the buffet table, and guests are always welcome.

Jewish Humor Group

A LAUGH IS A SHORTCUT TO AN INSTANT VACATION!

Temple Adas Israel boasts an informal robust Jewish Humor Group that: (1) meets at members’ homes to exchange jokes, share potluck dinners — and enjoy warm camaraderie; (2) creates memorable entertainment events at the synagogue for Hanukkah and Purim — for example, staging a modern Jewish Humor version of “The Rabbi Of Oz”, written, directed, and performed by the talented congregation members to wide acclaim. Please contact Celia Paul and Stephen Rosen at celiasandsteve@gmail.com for more information.

Knit-A-Mitzvah

Knit-A-Mitzvah meets virtually every Monday morning from 11:00am.

We knit or crochet projects for charity, while enjoying each other’s company and solving the problems of the world!

Among our projects are:

  • Hats for chemo patients

  • Lap blankets for veterans

  • Tote bags for wheelchair patients

  • Tweedle Muffs for dementia patients

We welcome new ideas and new members to join us! Donations of yarn are always appreciated.
