Life Cycle Events

BIRTH

Margaret_sGrandson.jpeg

Mazel Tov! We invite members and friends to schedule a baby naming for baby girls (Brit Bat), either within a Shabbat service at temple, or on a weekday at your home. Rabbi Geffen will also be able to refer you to a mohel for your son or grandson's Brit Milah, which takes place on the eighth day of a boy's life. A special blessing after the ritual Brit Milah may be scheduled during a synagogue service.

B’NEI MITZVAH

Bat Mitzvah at Bima (2).jpg

B’nei Mitzvah are critical rites of passage and life cycle events for adolescents. The program prepares young people for their lives as Jewish adults.

B’nei Mitzvah are celebrated throughout the year in context of our Shabbat services. Pre-B’nei Mitzvah and B’nei Mitzvah students participate in Friday night and Shabbat morning services, read from the Torah, chant their Haftarah, and deliver a Dvar Torah (Torah discussion) on the Torah portion (Parsha) for the week of their celebration. We are an egalitarian community; boys and girls become B’nei Mitzvah at the age of 13.

Adult B’nei Mitzvah We encourage our adult members who did not have the opportunity in their childhood, to study with Rabbi Dan and Shelley Lichtenstein to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. This is often an empowering Jewish journey for our adult members.

DEATH

When a loved one dies, there are many decisions that must be made immediately. Temple members should contact Rabbi Geffen on his cell phone or by calling the office and following voicemail instructions. He will guide you through the process of funeral preparations and mourning rituals.

Funerals should be scheduled as soon as possible after a death, preferably within 24 hours. Please consult our pamphlet, A Time to Mourn: A Guide to Planning a Funeral and to Ways of Mourning, also available in the Temple Office.

Our nichum aveilim (comforting mourners) team is ready to help organize services for the shiva house and to provide a meal of consolation. Contact the Temple Office for more information.

The Temple's cemetery, Chevra Kodetia, is located on Route 114, just south of the Village of Sag Harbor. (GPS address is 500 ft. south of 280 Hampton Street, Sag Harbor, NY 11963.) Please contact the Temple Treasurer, Howard Chwatsky, for more information: 631-725-4523 | cemetery@templeadasisrael.org.
